In a SWEET move today, the Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander just got a little bit closer for the long haul. The Tigers announced that they will retain the services of Verlander, who many believe could be the Greatest Tiger Pitcher, EVER! Verlander will receive a 5 year extension worth in the ballpark of $180 million. Verlander will be around 36 or 37 by the time this contract expires, which will put him near the start of the twilight of his career. His dominant years as a pitcher will no doubt be wearing the Old English D across his heart. Pitching for this city, he will not only etch his way into Tigers lore, but also into the MLB HOF.
This deal makes Verlander the highest paid pitcher in Major League Baseball right now. Verlander’s contract was up after 2015 and the Tigers were not willing to take a chance and lose their right handed ace and franchise star.
Verlander’s career highlights include:
- 2006 American League Rookie of the Year
- 2011 American League Cy Young Award winner
- 2011 American League Most Valuable Player
- 24 win season
- 5 time All Star
- 4 seasons of 215+ strike outs
Justin seemed thrilled to continue his dominance in the D. He tweeted to all of his followers today: “I love this city & the fans – couldn’t be more excited to spend my career here! We’re going to bring a World Series to Detroit!!!”
